Tip of the Month

It has been a long cold snowy winter and with spring around the corner, it is time to start thinking about the gardens around our homes. Here are a few tips that are perfect for early spring garden preparation during the month of March.

During early March
Start your spring clean-up in planting beds and lawns by removing winter debris.
Prune any branches that may have snapped from the heavy snow.
Place compost around your shrubs when the soil becomes workable.

During late March
Spray a dormant oil, such as Ortho Volck Oil, on shrubs and trees BEFORE trees begin to flower and open.
Fertilize perennials with a balanced fertilizer, such as a 5-10-5, when soil becomes workable.
Apply a permanent weed killer to planting beds to help prevent weed growth throughout the growing season.
Apply a crabgrass killer and fertilizer to lawns to help stop them before they start.

These tips will help to get your plants off to a great start! Please be sure to check our website as we will be posting gardening tips throughout the rest of the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at hgpro@hotmail.com

Happy Planting!
